Why We’re Lighting Up Christmas This Year: A Special Celebration for Oliver
Christmas has always been a magical time of year, but this year, it feels even more special for our little family. The biggest reason we’ve come together to set up lights and decorations is to give Oliver, our 3-year-old, the chance to fall in love with Christmas all over again—and maybe even more than before!
Oliver has always been mesmerized by flashing lights. They’ve been a source of pure joy for him. But this year is different. Oliver has made incredible progress in his development. As a non-verbal child with Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Global Developmental Delay (GDD), every step forward feels monumental. Over the past few months, he’s started speaking words, reciting his ABCs, counting numbers, and naming colors. He’s growing into a curious little boy who’s noticing and appreciating the world around him in ways we hadn’t seen before.
Previously, Oliver was more inclined to gravitate towards technology, but now he’s finding joy in the “little things”—and that’s been a gift in itself. Watching him light up at the sight of Christmas decorations has given us even more reason to make this holiday season as bright and joyful as possible.
This Christmas isn’t just about the presents for our household. It’s about the moments that make Oliver’s face glow with happiness. It’s about seeing him smile from ear to ear, surrounded by his big sister, little brother, mum, dad, and extended family. The twinkling lights, the cheerful songs, and the magic of the season all come together to create memories that mean so much more than material gifts ever could.
As we reflect on this journey, with all its highs and lows, we feel so grateful for how far Oliver has come. Every milestone, no matter how small it might seem to others, is a huge achievement for him and for us as a family. This year, we’re celebrating not just Christmas but the incredible progress Oliver has made. Seeing the world through his eyes makes the season brighter and more meaningful than ever.I’m shining bright for autism
This Christmas, I’m shining bright for the estimated 1 in 40 Australians on the autism spectrum.
Join me in celebrating the magic of giving and donate to my Shine for autism decorative light display - TODAY!
People on the autism spectrum see, hear, feel and experience the world differently. For many, simply coping with the everyday, including Christmas, can lead to confusion, anxiety and isolation.
By coming together and taking action, we can help provide opportunities for people on the autism spectrum to participate, engage and thrive in the world around them.
Let's come together, one light at a time, and make this festive season truly special.
